Kralan cake is a traditional Khmer cake that is made by steaming rice into a bamboo tube and sealing it with coconut or banana leaves and roasting it from the outside around the bamboo shell. According to locals in Battambang province, the word “kralan” originates from the “Kola” ethnic group in Burma, who fled and live in what is now Pailin province. Indigenous people of Kola eat sour rice as a daily food, unlike our Cambodians who eat plain rice (plain rice). The Kola people in the past were engaged in mining, gems, gold, diamonds, hunting, logging, etc., which required them to travel in the forest for many days. Each time they went to the forest, they never brought with them clay pots, as they realized that they were heavy, fragile, and fragile. They use the method of cooking by finding bamboo shoots with large holes, then cooking them by placing the bamboo tubes vertically and then setting them on fire.

As for the Cambodians who went to mine and cut wood with the Kola people at that time, they also found that the sourdough rice cooked in bamboo tubes tasted far different from the sourdough rice cooked in ordinary pots. When they return from the forest, they spread the word about how to cook rice cooked in bamboo tubes to the villagers. Since then, the Khmer people have called this cake “Nom Kralan” similar to the name of the Kola ethnic group. From generation to generation, Cambodians have been making car-making ingredients that have evolved to the present day, with ingredients such as: sour rice, black beans, sugar, coconut milk and a little salt, banana leaves or coconut milk for grilling. The people of these areas still maintain the tradition of making car cakes, believing that the legacy of their ancestors left for future generations has made their lives a bit more prosperous, it is the ancestral livelihood. In Battambang province, Kralan cake is considered as a traditional cake and also a tourism product in Ek Phnom district. Kralan Ek Phnom residents are said to have a delicious taste, popular and even have an interesting and long history for the villagers of Samrong in Nora and Ta Kom villages, Ek Phnom district, Battambang province.

According to local reports, the recipe for their delicious cake was to mix sour rice with black beans, coconut milk and other ingredients and stuff it into a bamboo tube and bake.

Ek Phnom residents sell this cake from 1,000 riel and up, depending on the size. The making of car cakes by Samrong Knong villagers still adheres to the traditional recipes for making and cooking this type of cake. According to the report from the Battambang Provincial Department of Tourism, every morning, national and international tourists who visit Wat Samrong Knong always spend time visiting and tasting this car cake. Currently in Battambang province, it is observed that this cake is sold in the market, parking lot and in other resorts and towns.
